Come As occurs every year, the Spanish community reunited on October 12th in the church of Saint Saviors Monastery, located in the Christian quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem, in order to celebrate the day of Spain. The General Consul of Spain, ! Jose Maria Ferre, was present, along with his wife, other members of the Spanish Consulate, and members of the International Cooperation. Religious communities present included the Missionary Daughters of Calvary, the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary, and the Daughters of Charity of the Theresa Institute. These Spaniards here in Jerusalem dedicate their lives disinterestedly to many types of educative, social, and religious activities.
Father Artemio Vitores, O.F.M., the Vicar of the Custody of the Holy Land, presided at the Holy Mass at which the Spaniards participated, along with the aforementioned religious communities, other local faithful, journalists, and other information agencies. Among the concelebrants was the Guardian of Saint Saviors Monastery, Father Jerzj Kraj, O.F.M., from Poland. Also present were priests and male and female religious from
Spain and Latin America, many of whom were young and enlivened the celebration with singing and with their presence
During the homily [LINK], Father Artemio reflected on the Christian heritage of the Spanish culture that traces its roots back to apostolic times. Given the current circumstances which drive the Spanish society, Father Artemio asked if such a precious Christian inheritance should not be protected and promoted by the Government, given that the Christian inheritance is a fundamental good. In this way, there would not be the danger of the disintegration of the values of communal life and of societal well-being.
At the conclusion of the Mass all the participants gathered in the fraternity hall of Saint Saviors for refreshments and to exchange greetings.
